A challenge that leaves no environmental footprint<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our initial challenge was to design a boat-type cardboard kayak<\/strong> that was as respectful as possible with the environment as it was built with recycled and recyclable raw materials<\/strong>. We have been making several attempts, all fruitful but applying improvements in each version. Finally, our idea came to life, never better said.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Our references to design the kayak<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the design of the cardboard kayak, we used as a reference the exercise that Engineering professor Dave Friant asked his students at Auburn University <\/strong>in 1982: to build a Kayak out of cardboard that would pass the test of navigating a distance of 100 meters<\/strong>. All his experience is phenomenally illustrated in the book: \u2018The Cardboard Boat Book<\/a>\u2019 (Reissued in 2009).<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Another reference, in this case,e more playful, is the ‘cardboard races<\/a>‘ Ocardboard boat racing<\/strong>, which for some years has been becoming popular. In them, the competitors are grouped into teams, make their cardboard designs and cover a certain distance in the shortest time possible without being shipwrecked in the attempt. early examples They date from the ’60s<\/strong> in the United States. <\/strong>They are currently developing graces of this type in many countries<\/strong>, organized by institutions, clubs,s or as a team building<\/a> for businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many other interesting references on cardboard boat design, or folding boats<\/strong> that allow folding and being transported lightly. Foldboat<\/a> or also Orukayak are some examples of this.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Waterproof, resistant, and easy to assemble<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Corrugated cardboard, as long as the papers used in its manufacture are of good quality, is a material much more waterproof than<\/strong> we think<\/strong>. We get the best results when we use it taking advantage of flat surfaces and protecting edges<\/strong>, since once the water enters through the ends, the material deteriorates in a few seconds. The waterproofing<\/strong> of the cardboard is achieved through 2 primers of Ecological natural latex water-based varnish<\/strong>. To protect the exterior joints between pieces and the visible edges of the cardboard, we have made a seal with a transparent silicone cord<\/strong> and in some cases too white duct tape<\/strong>. All of these materials can be easily found at any DIY store.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

The structure is the one that brings solidity<\/strong> to the kayak. It consists of 155 pieces<\/strong> different nested together. To build it we use digitally die-cut 7 mm thick cardboard sheets. Once structured and clad with the exterior parts, the boat measures 220 cm high x 70 cm wide x 4 cm high and weighs about 12 kg. Hemounting<\/strong> can be donebetween twoo people in 15 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

The first adventures on the water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And from the sea we went to a swimming pool<\/strong>forn our second aquatic test. This cardboard kayak prototype was enjoyed live and direct during the FestivalTranstropicalia<\/strong> (Alicante), where we were invited to give one of the brief presentations of the day.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n
