Multi-purpose designs in Cardboard
Cardboard design.
Every eco-designer worth his salt knows that sustainability goes far beyond ‘greening’. It is much more about efficiency and achieving optimum use of resources. Hence, designing multipurpose products can play a key role, but it’s not an easy task!
#01_HELP DESK
The Bombay-based non-profit Aarambh created, out of cardboard, this desk-briefcase for children in India. The initiative intended to promote and facilitate learning at the school since hundred of kids write and read on the rough floor (some in unhealthy conditions).

#02_TASTE THE DEAL (El Sabor Encaja)
Diana and María, two young Spanish entrepreneurs from Murcia, created in 2013 the product called “El Sabor Encaja” (Taste this Deal). In order to foster local gastronomy, Cartonlab designed these cardboard briefcases, which contain typical products from the region of Murcia, such as wine, canned food, pâté, olives… The cool thing about it is that once the briefcase is empty, it can be repurposed as a lamp!

#03_OVEN BOX
Saturday Manufacturing and xpedx teamed up in order to design the packaging of the well-known Thelma’s Treats, a warm cookie delivery business in the U.S. The design consisted of an oven-shaped box made out of cardboard with insulating properties, which is capable of keeping the cookies warm, whilst protecting them during delivery time. A brilliant example of how branding, functionality, and design blend together so as to create a powerful product which will remain in one’s mind for a long time!

#04_RACKING CHAIR
In Cartonlab, we like to think about our products the same way we do about cats. We like them to have as many lives as possible! We always design having in mind that the more functions an object is able to have, the better. This rack-chair was created with that in mind: it is a rack, it is also a shelf, it is a chair, and it catches your eye. Designed for homes, or retailing spaces!
